Pray. Listen. Act.

Living and loving like Jesus

Regardless of age, background, occupation, or season of life, God has strategically placed each of us in neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, gyms, coffee shops, and communities. These are the places where He calls us to be present, intentional, and available to the people He has placed in our path.

And that's exactly how God has always worked. Throughout Scripture, we see Him using ordinary people in ordinary places to accomplish extraordinary things. He doesn't ask us to have all the answers. He simply asks us to be available.

For some of you, loving your neighbors is already part of who you are. If that's you, we need you. Your example will encourage and inspire the rest of us as we learn to live this out together.

For many of us, though, this feels uncomfortable—maybe even impossible. You may be thinking, I wouldn't even know where to start.

The good news is, it doesn't have to be complicated. It can begin with three simple, intentional steps.

Pray

Whether it's for a couple of minutes or much longer, ask God to soften your heart, open your eyes to the people around you, and help you notice the needs you encounter at work, in your neighborhood, at school, or wherever your day takes you. Prayer prepares us to join the work God is already doing.

Listen

God often speaks through gentle nudges—a growing compassion for someone, a situation you can't seem to ignore, or an opportunity that keeps coming to mind. Sometimes He makes the next step obvious. Other times you may wonder, Is that me, or is that You, God? Either way, we want to become people who are listening.

Act

This is often the hardest part. It takes courage to step forward, but the more we practice, the more natural it becomes. You don't have to change your schedule or add something new to your calendar. As you simply live your life, God will place opportunities in your path. As we pray, listen, and act in ordinary moments, God often does extraordinary things. Sometimes, the simplest act of obedience becomes the place where heaven touches earth through you.
